In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
